Chroming

Chrome as coating

Chrome is well known for its excellent properties whereby it has versatile applications and is ideal as protective and decorative coating. It is recommended for parts subject to strong corrosion, abrasion and wear. Chroming is used for steel and grey iron casting, but is also suitable for copper alloys.

Benefits of chroming

Types of chroming

Decorative chroming is a process where a thin chromium top layer is applied to the nickel or copper-nickel base layer. Chrome plays a dual role here, because it does not only increase corrosion resistance, but prevents the matting of the nickel coating. The result is an attractive, glossy finish resistant to outdoor temperature fluctuation and condensation. Decorative chroming is mainly used for bathroom equipment as well as car and motorbike parts. We use decorative chroming. The chrome (III) plating technology is environmentally friendly and contains no carcinogens. It grants more even coating and also fulfils the RoHS directives of the EU.

Chroming methods

Chroming is carried out in hanging a process. In this process, the parts are clipped on or tied to the fixtures. The fixtures ensure stable hanging and good contact. We regularly maintain our fixtures to ensure a permanently attractive finish.

Az általunk alkalmazott króm 3 technológia környezetbarát, rákkeltő anyagokat nem tartalmaz. It provides a more uniform coverage and complies with the EU RoHS directive.

Our technology allows the electroplating of previous raw materials.

How do we calculate the price of chrome plating?

There are still misconceptions that chrome plating is just a matter of placing the workpiece to be chrome plated in the plating bath and then finishing it off by depositing the chrome.

The final price of chrome plating is calculated by the following process

01
Preparation

Chrome plating, and all other surface treatment technologies, have a preparation phase during which the surface of the workpiece is cleaned of all contaminants such as rust, revel and sanding paste residues. The aim is to ensure that the surface is metallically clean and that the coating is applied evenly to the work surface to be electroplated. If required, we can also carry out the sanding, which is an important aspect of the pricing. In summary, the price of chrome plating is influenced by the preparation stage and the need for sanding.

02
Material

Our technology allows chromium plating on the following materials : iron, brass, zamak, steel. The price of chrome plating may vary for different materials, as the thickness of the required coating (copper – nickel – chrome) may differ for certain materials.

03
Size

The price of chrome plating depends on the size of the workpiece surface, not the weight of the workpiece. Our tubs measure 800 X 500 X 250 mm. Depending on this, we can chrome any workpiece within this range that can be placed horizontally or diagonally in the bath. For more complex surfaces we can only calculate the price of chrome plating on the spot, in other cases it is sufficient to send us the exact dimensions by e-mail or the parameters of the part (to the millimetre) on the Ask for a Quotation page, so that we can calculate the price of chrome plating for you.

04
Layer thickness

Another important consideration is the environment in which you intend to use the workpiece to be chrome plated. Different coating thicknesses (copper – nickel – chrome) are recommended for indoor and outdoor environments, and humidity also has a big influence on the choice. For example, a much thicker coating will be required in a humid outdoor environment than in a dry indoor environment.
