The purpose of preparation

The first step is to make ready the workpiece for the galvanization, which is waiting for chroming or nickel plating.

Preparation refers to all the operations and purges that are required to ensure that the workpiece’s surface is appropriate for forming the required coating or surface layers.

Less or greater contamination of the surface occurs during the production of the workpiece.

A wide range of impurities can be found for example anvil drosses, metallic-oxides, fingerprints, abrasive paste residues, and other variety of impurities.

The appearance of the impurities also shows a wide variety of colors and their adhesion to the surface of the metals can be very different. Besides their physical properties, the chemical characteristics and adherence types determine too how we can remove them.

Surface impurities can be classified into two large groups

Formed impurities

e.g.: scale, rust

Adhesive impurities

e.g.: oil, grease, dust

Thanks to our professional preparation activities, we can assure you that our coatings will stand the test of time.

Physical, chemical and physico-chemical pre-treatment processes are used to prepare workpieces. This process makes the surface suitable for electroplating. Parts made from different materials go through a different process.

Do you have an object to be electroplated?

Copper plating of workpieces

Workpieces that are also used outdoors are more exposed to weather conditions, and you have to consider temperature fluctuations or even strong condensation. To ensure the proper preservation of these tools and parts, our company recommends the copper–nickel–chrome coating system. The essence of this is that copper is used as a base layer, nickel is used as an intermediate layer and a chrome coating is applied to the workpiece as a last layer. This coating technology makes your objects more resistant to extreme conditions. As a first stage of technology, the workpiece receives an intermediate copper coating.

A copper plating is one of the most widespread electroplating process.
It is used as a base coating for corrosion protection.

The resulting light red copper layer separated from cyanide electrolytes has a fine crystalline structure and forms a relatively hard coating. It is used to compensate major surface roughness. On the surface of the electrolytically deposited copper, a thin oxide layer is formed in the air and is colored brownish black.

Chroming of workpieces

A Galvanic chrome coating, i.e., chrome plating can be used for workpieces requiring a non-corrosive surface, and since the shininess of the nickel coating is transient, decorative coating is also important. Chrome plating deposited by galvanization is wear-resistant, has a good resistance to corrosion and oxidizing materials by forming a thin oxide layer on the surface, which reduces corrosion. The chromium coating has a good resistance to the corrosive effect of gases, acids, salts, and alkali liquors.

We use decorative chroming.

A thin chromium layer is deposited – usually on an intermediate nickel layer for decorative chroming applications. Plating has a dual role here: it reduces the matting of the nickel layer thus retaining its shininess and increasing corrosion resistance. The result is an attractive, glossy finish resistant to outdoor temperature fluctuation and condensation. The chrome (III) plating technology is environmentally friendly and contains no carcinogens. It provides a more even coverage and conforms to EU RoHS directives, which are increasingly required in galvanic plants.

Nickel coating of workpieces

Nickel plating is recommended for the corrosion protection of mainly steel, cast zinc, iron, brass and its alloys. Nickel plating gives not only an even gloss to the surface, but ensures good resistance in neutral, alkaline and acidic environment.

In electroplating practice, nickel plating is used for decorative or protective ornamental purposes.

The appearance of glossy nickel used by us is suitable for decorative purposes. Usually it is used as a self-contained coating or as an intermediate layer. The most important feature of these coatings is their appearance.

For protective and decorative purposes, the nickel coating is used individually or as part of a coppernickelchromium coating system.

Copper - nickel - chrome coating system

The essence of the copper-nickel-chrome coating system is that copper is used as a base layer, nickel is used as an intermediate layer and a chrome coating is applied to the workpiece as a last layer. This surface treatment gives objects excellent resistance to corrosion, condensation and temperature fluctuation, while they retain their shiny, glossy appearance. Apart from the external appearance of these coatings, the excellent corrosion resistance of the deposited coating is also important.

Depending on the goal to be achieved, reflection and corrosion resistance are the most important properties of the deposited coatings.

The galvanic nickel-plating on the surface of steel and zinc castings is called cathodic coating. This means that the corrosion of the base metal will always start on places of defect (scratches, holes, etc.).

A thin oxide film develops on the nickel coating, which results in the significant drop in glossiness, the surface becoming dull. To prevent this, a thin chromium layer is deposited on the nickel coatings and this can help keep the coating glossy. In the air, a passive film is rapidly formed on the chromium surface, which has a positive effect on the corrosion resistance of the nickel layer. This is because the deposited chromium layer becomes nobler than the (especially glossy) nickel layer underneath.

It should be noted, however, that working conditions are more sophisticated, at the same time the solutions and electrolytes are also more delicate. They require more care and are more expensive, and one has to consider at all times the way the additives applied modify the structure of the coating and its anticorrosion value (e.g. the sulphuric content of glossy nickel coating).

A sophisticated glossy technologies selected with due care and thoughtfulness can be used to achieve favourable technical and economic results.

Our plating tools are designed to be easy to handle and to make the most efficient use of the space available, providing you with a cost-effective solution.

Hazardous waste management and disposal

Our galvanizing company cares about its natural and social environment, so the aspects of social responsibility are voluntarily enforced during our business activity. These aspects are also taken into account in our relations with our partners. We believe that value-based businesses must give something back to society. As a responsible galvanizing plant, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and our ecological footprint. As an ethical company, we only work with subcontractors and suppliers who are familiar with the quality and environmental guidelines of Cromkontakt Galvánipari Kft. and are judged to be compatible with our environmental policy.

We comply with the RoHS directive.

One of the key pillars of our environmental policy is that our technology should be environmentally friendly, so we use a chrome 3 bath, which is a more environmentally friendly technology than traditional chroming. We are proud that the parts and workpieces coated by out company are in compliance with EU RoHS guidelines.

Rinsing waters, leachates

The most important issue of galvanizing is the treatment and disposal of hazardous waste and waste water. Therefore, the economical and selective treatment of galvanic flushing waters is of the utmost importance, since the useful materials can be recovered from them in each case. The useful materials rinsed from the workpieces are essential components of galvanic baths, thus the effluent water is returned to the baths. This way we also make up for the evaporation loss.

With this solution, rinse water is re-usable. After the first filling of the galvanizing bath, the amount of water used is minimized and the amount of chemicals to be made up for the galvanic baths is reduced.

Naturally, waste is generated even in this system. For example, mixed rinsing waters, drainage waters, wash waters, which can no longer be cleaned economically. However, their volume is only a fraction compared to the amount of waste water in a conventional cleaning system.

This waste is collected in a separate container and professionally disposed of. We also take care not only of the natural environment but also of our staff. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and ecological footprint.

Occupational health

We pay due attention not only to the natural environment but also to our colleagues. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and our ecological footprint. An important work-related health aspect in the galvanizing plant is to maintain the right air condition of the workplace. This is ensured by a special air extraction and ventilation system.

The proper functioning of such systems is monitored by a regular workplace air condition test, and ambient air load is measured by an emissions test at the exit duct. The exit duct as a point source is also authorized by the Environmental Protection Inspectorate and we also regularly measure the emission values.

Cromkontakt, chroming and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)

RoHS compliance is the responsibility of the distributor. Under these regulations, RoHS compliance has been incorporated into CE regulation, so CE marking also means that the product complies with RoHS rules. Although RoHS is an EU directive, manufacturers of electronics and electronic equipment outside Europe should also comply with the rules if they import their products to EU Member States.

RoHS is the EU directive on the restriction of the use of hazardous substances. The Directive applies to electrical and electronic equipment and their parts (including replacement parts required for repair) for which electrical current or electromagnetic field is required to operate.

The directive isaimed at the protection of health and the environment,as the restricted substances are toxic and accumulate in the living organism.

Only those products can be placed on the market in EU member states that comply with RoHS regulations.

The EU requires a strict limitation on the use of the following substances:

Lead (Pb)
Mercury (Hg)
Hexavalent chromium (CrVI)
Cadmium (Cd)

Permitted concentration levels

Cromkontakt Galvánipari Kft. is fully compliant with the requirements. Decorative chrome plating is done in Chrome 3 baths, free from hexavalent chrome and the other restricted materials. We are proud that our chrome-plating technology protects health and is environmentally friendly!
